I knew that in order to enjoy the holiday spirit instead of rushing around like we have been lately, that I’d have to make it happen.
Thus was born our first Advent Activities calendar. The idea for the countdown calendar had been brewing in my head since fall but my stitching fingers were not as fast. Hey, it was only a day late!
I sewed strips of pretty Christmas fabric, then turned them each inside out. I dabbed a bit of glue on and stuck on the velcro (yay! No sew! Again, time was of the essence!)
I linked each bit of fabric up to make an Advent chain…..
It’s not perfect, but that doesn’t matter to Summer and John. Inside each link I tuck inside a note that says what our Advent activity of the day will be. It works so well for us! Two kids and two jobs: One un-linking the fabric and the other pulling out the paper!
For that first day of Advent, we were already busy. I allowed for crazy nights by adding in activities that were simple: Read Christmas stories, sing Christmas songs, sip hot chocolate, paint toenails Christmas colors. Reading was what was on the list that night and Summer brought home the perfect accompaniment that night!
There are other, bigger activities too. Cutting our Christmas tree, seeing Santa, Christmas Eve celebration at Aunt Tina’s, cookie making. Ah yes, cookie making. What would the holidays be without cookie making?
Oh yeah, and eating them too!
The one activity that I’m beginning to question is sledding! Will it ever snow here???
And so the holiday spirit has felt strong here. Our Advent Activities calendar has forced us to slooooooowwwww down and enjoy this most beautiful season.
